victory | finally, the tar heels catch a break

i've watched as butch davis has patiently gone about rebuilding the football program at unc.  he is doing a fantastic job.  unlike basketball, a football program takes a long time to turn around and can be a slow process.  what most people fail to realize is that last year, carolina was only about 10 points from a 10 win season.  the only game where there was more than a touchdown loss was to nc state -- and yes that hurt! not to mention, the basketball team has won a couple of national titles during this time.  the fact that the football program has such excitement and high expectations in this environment is an incredible testiment to coach davis.

i was at the virginia tech game last year with my son, zach.  we had to leave at half for something i had to do at church, so when i heard we had lost i was astonished.  we left very happy and fairly confident we would win.  much like last week against florida state, the heels dominated the first half. and in similar fashion against the seminoles, they just couldn't hold on in the end.  last years team had a young defense and a very strong offense.  this year the heels have an incredible defense and a very young offense that is developing each game.

in basketball, freshmen can come in at the beginning of the season, lose some games while gaining experience and still win a national championship.  that just isn't the case in football.  you have to build from scratch and can't bank on the fact that you have even one game to spare.  so it should come as no surprise that a stellar freshman recruiting class for unc football has made some mistakes.  unfortunately, they cost a couple cames.  sometimes, you will see teams catch all the breaks and freshmen mistakes won't be as noticable because the ball bounces to the win column.  however, these are the unc players that will bring carolina football back to national prominance.  with a defense that should remain solid, and an offense that will have games under their belt, coach davis will have a team that will compete (and hopefully beat) every team they play.

congrats to the heels tonight on a great win against va tech!
